Her acting career began by performing in stage productions when she was studying at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, she made her Broadway stage debut as Becky Thatcher in the comedy musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and was in the Broadway revival of The Crucible the following year. In 2004, she starred in the action-thriller Spartan (2004). She was also recognized for her performance as Becky Thatcher from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In the next year, she appeared on Broadway in a rerun of The Crucible. The role that she was playing in the 2014 movie was changed and it was revived for the 2019. In the course of her work on Veronica Mars, Bell starred in the role of Mary Lane in the musical film Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) as an incarnation of the character she performed in the New York musical of the similar name.Bell starred as Elle Bishop in the superhero drama series Heroes from 2007 to 2008. Bell was the voice of the character's narrator on the Teen Drama Series Gossip Girl. She will reprise her role in the sequel, which will premiere in 2021. Bell also played Jeannie van der Hooven the female lead on the Showtime comedy series House of Lies. Bell was a part of Eleanor Shellstrop in the NBC comedy series The Good Place. This performance led to her being nominated for the Golden Globe Award. Bell also portrayed the role of Eleanor Shellstrop in the streaming show The Woman in the Home The Girl in the Window Across the Street Girl in the Window.
